Evaluating a credible website

In order to have a reliable research, one needs to use truthful information that can only be found from credible websites. The internet has all types of websites, which give information ranging from personal opinions to carefully researched materials. It is, therefore, imperative to distinguish between the two ranges of website in order to give truthful information in a research, especially at college level. Credible websites have their information regulated before being posted to the web. On evaluating a website, some of the common questions a student should ask him or herself is the author of the information, whether it is biased, the accuracy of the information, or whether the website is recent enough for the topic under research.

The website under evaluation is Highwire. It provides a digital dissemination of books, journals, proceedings and reference works to researchers and librarians (Highwire, 2014). In order to find Highwire, one can just type the word in Google search, and it appears the first one. I chose this website for evaluation because of its high usage by many students, librarians and publishers during their course of research. The web address for the website is http://highwire.stanford.edu/lists/freeart.dtl.

The reason why the website is considered credible is its affiliations with Stanford University since 1995. Different online journals were launched, and they have been updated to date, giving the website a clear reason to rely on during research. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC Online) and Journal of Neuroscience have joined the online journal website (Highwire, 2014). These journals have given the website more credibility because they were established earlier, and have gained a positive reputation of providing truthful information since they were established.

As discussed above, the information in the website is highly recommended for researchers, especially in the nursing field. It has varied types of journals that cover the nursing practice completely.

From its mission statement, the website aims at extending the impact, reach and exchange of scholarly materials through outstanding service, innovative technology and engaging the community (Highwire, 2014).

Ease of navigation

From its organization, it is easy to find a journal from the website by typing in the search section. One can type the author, the title or even just a keyword, and suitable journals are found. From this point, one can easily access the material and citation of the journal from the website (Highwire, 2014).

Privacy and security policies

The website administrators own the rights to publish the journal materials after evaluating their credibility. No one else can upload his or her materials on this website, and this improves its reputation. Its privacy is protected through regularly checking any information that the administrators are provided with from the users (Highwire, 2014). At times, their privacy statement allows them to ask their users information for identification when using the website. It is important to provide truthful information in such instances in order to promote their efforts for privacy and security. The information the website collects includes visits, traffic data, location, resources for access and other communication data. The website also respects the user’s privacy and cannot exchange, sell or release any individual information without the consent of the user (Highwire, 2014).

From the information above, it is evident that Highwire is a credible website that can be used to research medical materials by anyone. It provides free resources, and thus enrich dissemination of knowledge to different people in the world, as a way of promoting literature. Its affiliation with Stanford University ensures that the research is worthwhile for every person using it. It has adopted the most recent technology in its privacy and security measures in order to protect itself from malicious intents.
